Curious about whether a smile makeover can include the use of dental veneers? Dental veneers are one of the various treatments used in cosmetic dentistry as part of smile makeovers. They can significantly enhance the way your teeth look in as little as two visits to a dentist. Dental veneers are thin shells that cover the front part of teeth, hiding any flaws on them.
Veneers are commonly used to fix cosmetic dental issues like:
- Chipped teeth
- Stains and discoloration that are resistant to whitening treatments
- Spaces between teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Short teeth
How dental veneers work as part of a smile makeover
Veneers are responsible for many of the amazing smiles you see on television. Once reserved for only the rich and famous, everyone now has access to these dental enhancements. The process of getting veneers start with a consultation with a dentist.
During this appointment, the dentist will go over the patient's concerns and desires. The dentist will perform an oral examination to determine whether veneers are the right solution for the patient or if other treatments like teeth whitening or crowns are better suited for it. The installation of veneers requires the removal of a small portion of enamel to ensure the veneers look natural after installation. Failing to do so can lead to the patient's teeth appearing larger than normal after veneers are installed. The patient will be sent home and given some time to contemplate their decision.
During the second appointment, the dentist will prepare the patient's teeth for veneers. Portions of enamel will be removed and digital images or an impression of the patient's teeth will be taken. If digital imaging is used, the data will be projected on a screen which allows the dentist and patient to see what the patient's teeth will look like once the veneers are installed. The patient gets to provide their input as the dentist designs their veneers. The information is sent to a lab where the oral restorations are made. The patient will be fitted with temporary veneers and sent back home.
During the third appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary veneers and install the customized ones. Dental cement is used to keep the veneers permanently attached to the patient's teeth. The dentist might schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor how the patient adjusts to their veneers.
Life after getting dental veneers
There is not much of a recovery period after getting veneers, but the patient might experience tooth sensitivity for a few days. Patients should avoid eating chewy, sticky or hard foods for the first 24 hours after getting veneers as that might lead to one becoming dislodged. Good oral hygiene is essential to get the most out of veneers.
