As a sleep apnea dentist, we have treated patients throughout the 85710 area with non-invasive methods, but sometimes this is not enough. In some cases, oral surgery may be necessary. To find out which solution is right for you, call (520) 368-3351 and schedule an examination.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

When your airways are blocked, it becomes impossible to get the level of oxygen your body needs to function at optimal capacity. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when your airways become blocked due to your lower jaw falling backward and your tongue doing the same, or there being excessive tissue at the back of the throat causing the blockage. At Simply Smiles Dentistry, our goal is to remove the blockage so you can breathe freely.

Sleep Apnea Dentist Oral Surgery Treatment: Your Options

If you live in Tucson or the 85710 area, you have multiple options for how to treat your sleep apnea. If surgery is required, there are three main solutions:

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). We perform this procedure in a hospital to remove the extra tissue in your throat and upper mouth. It is completed while you are under general anesthesia, so you do not feel anything nor are you aware of what is happening.

Maxillomandibular Advancement. We can create more room behind the soft palate by moving your lower jaw forward, away from the rest of your facial bones. As a result, the obstruction should be eliminated or significantly reduced.

Tracheostomy. When nothing else has worked, you may need a tracheostomy. This is certainly the last resort because it involves having a tube placed in your throat to help you breathe at night.

Schedule a Consultation With a Sleep Apnea Dentist

No surgery should be completed without a careful evaluation of the pros and cons, risks and rewards. As a Tucson sleep apnea dentist, we can examine you and make a recommendation as to which procedure would best solve your specific challenges. We understand that each of our patients is unique and so are their struggles. That is why we take the time to get to know you, understand your concerns, and create customized treatment plans based on that information. You can be confident that when you visit Simply Smiles Dentistry, you will be receiving the best sleep apnea care. Call (520) 368-3351 to schedule an appointment today.
