Early Orthodontic Treatment for Open Bite
Early orthodontic treatment is effective at addressing many conditions. If your child is struggling with an open bite, you should speak with a family dentist near you. Though this issue is not common, it can affect the child’s emotional health and development. Fortunately, your family dentist will have the knowledge and training to repair this problem and restore your child’s smile.
Open bite: an explanation
Family dentists frequently treat patients who have crooked teeth. Interventions, such as braces and aligners, can also correct crossbites, underbites and overbites. Open bites are rarer but still cause challenges. This occurs when the upper and lower front teeth do not come together when the jaw closes. Technically known as a malocclusion, in this condition, this is no contact or overlap with the incisors.
An open bite is a good reason to seek early orthodontic treatment. It affects the patient’s smile and can hinder a person’s self-esteem. It can also cause problems with the patient’s speech. Someone with an open bite may have a lisp or other speech challenges.
How it happens
Many children and teens do not have straight teeth. Other people may have a crowded mouth or deal with abnormally small or large teeth. With an open bite, a jaw dysfunction could be the problem. Other culprits could be that the child has a mixture of baby and permanent teeth, not allowing all the teeth to match up and close this space when the mouth shuts. This condition could also develop when children push their tongue through front teeth when speaking or swallowing. Thumb-sucking is another possible cause.
Getting early orthodontic treatment for this condition
An open bite can show up by the time the child reaches the toddler stage or early elementary school age. Around age 7, parents should take their kids to the family dentist for early orthodontic treatment. Parents whose children have an open bite should express these concerns to the family dentist. After examining the patient, the family dentist can suggest various treatments and lay out a treatment plan.
Possible approaches to fixing an open bite
The right treatment will depend on the severity of the child’s condition and what caused it. For the most severe cases and when the jaw is to blame, surgery may be necessary. In this situation, a surgeon will remove part of the upper jaw and realign the jawbones, so the teeth match up correctly. Another approach is to insert an appliance in the mouth to keep the tongue from pushing against the teeth. The family dentist may also suggest that the patient wears a headgear to repair the bite and reposition the jaw.
Eliminate the gap, get a new smile
When you take your child in for early orthodontic treatment, you can give them a smile makeover. There can be significant effects on your child’s emotional well-being when an open bite is causing problems. With the help of a family dentist, you can correct this dysfunction. It is more effective to attack this issue when your child is young so they can enjoy a normal bite and facial appearance.
